Grade 2-3 rapids:
Half day or full day
From Otters' Haunt itself or from further downriver, we raft through the famous rapids of Big Daddy, LookSharp, Theatre and Gatsien on the half-day trip. The full day takes in lunch and we can come all the way from the Golf course in Parys to KommandoNek, a day packed with action. Lunch on full day is optional.
The river is always paddle-able and always has whitewater, summer and winter. This is probably the most popular stretch of whitewater in SA. Not surprisingly, because it is close to Gauteng, it attracts weekend crowds - but we know channels in the river than no-one else does and you'll be surprised how beautiful and peaceful it can be among the islands and between the rapids.
Dam and barrage releases upstream determine basically how much water there is, although heavy rainfall can make a difference too.
Raft-Dome Trips:
This 5-6 hour rafting trip combines my popular Vredefort Dome briefing and walk-n-talk with a river trip. The trip takes place downriver where the Vaal enters the Bergland, with good rapids followed by peaceful water in the valley between Witwatersrand strata.. It's an exciting way of seeing the features without having to hike to several points or drive right around the Dome.
About the Vredefort Dome:
The Vaal River runs directly through the world's oldest and largest blast crater, the Vredefort Dome. It is thought to have been caused by an asteroid strike some 2 billion years ago, although a minority of scientists contend that it may have been an explosion out of the Earth. Both the Dome and the river are absolutely unique in the world, and the scientific features of the area attract many tourists and expert groups, local and foreign. Come and see for yourself!
