About the fish
Largemouth yellowfish- less common than the smallmouth but bound to give a fantastic fight, especially on light tackle, the largest full scale freshwater fish in South Africa is pure enjoyment for the enthusiastic fishermen. They can be caught bait, with a fly line using deceiver patterns or using any predator type imitations.
Smallmouth yellowfish- found in river rapids scourging for food, these aggressive feeders can be caught using a number of fishing methods. A popular method called “Czech Nymphing” is often used as well as fly fishing using a number of different flies are a preferred method but they can also be caught using a light weight rig.

Carp- originally from Europe, this alien species has caused a fair amount of damage to a number of South African rivers and still waters. Fly fishing methods have proven very successful with the species and successful flies include blood worm imitations, woolly worms, Czech Nymph patterns, dragonfly nymphs amongst others.
Catfish- many fishermen aren’t fans of the slimy species. The Orange River, especially the Richterveld Nature Reserve section home some of the largest species.
